New Farmers Market to begin July 7th at Goodell Gardens and Homestead.

June 10, 2010: Goodell Gardens and Homestead will launch a new Farmers Market in Edinboro beginning July 7th and running through September 22, 2010. This seasonal Market will provide the residents of Edinboro and the surrounding communities with access to fresh, locally-grown produce and other products like maple syrup, hydroponic tomatoes and grass-fed beef.

The weekly Market will be held Wednesdays from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm at Goodell Gardens, located on Route 6N just east of Downtown Edinboro. The Gardens decided to hold the Market on Wednesday afternoon so that it wouldn’t compete with other weekend markets, and so that people could stop in on their way home from work. “The mission of our Farmers Market is to provide the Edinboro community with locally-grown, fresh, high-quality produce and other farm products and to educate consumers about the benefits of preserving local agriculture,” says Market Manager Heather Zimmerman, who also serves as the Gardens’ Educational Coordinator. “I think many people in the area have missed having a market in Edinboro and we are hoping that community members will take this opportunity to support local farmers by buying local food.”

Vendors for this inaugural season include Hurry Hill Farm (maple products), Skelton Farm (grass-fed, Piedmontese beef and alpaca wool), Honeycutt Nursery (annuals and perennials), B & R Greenhouse (perennials and produce), Hunter Farms (blueberries and hand-made soaps), Windover Farms (perennials, berries and produce) and Rick Walker Farms (hydroponic tomatoes and cucumbers).

The Gardens are accepting applications for next year's vendors. Anyone interested in selling at the market should contact Heather Zimmerman at (814)734-6699 for more information.

Goodell Gardens is now an iConservePA Partner!

August 2009

Goodell Gardens is excited to announce that we have become an iConservePA partner. iConservePA is "a web site managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, whose vision is to inspire citizens to value their natural resources, engage in conservation practices and experience the outdoors."

As a partner, the Gardens will share how we are taking steps to help conserve our natural resources and educate the public about the value of these resources. As a partner, Goodell Gardens is asked to "both promote the iConservePA program and practice conservation in meaningful ways. Partners must have institutionalized conservation/greening measures into their work and/or facilities of their organization. Partners must also prove they regularly inform the public and/or employees about conservation tools and methods; or provide a mechanism for citizen involvement in conservation (i.e. using volunteers or accepting membership towards conservation objectives)."

The iConservePA program has 5 major environmental themes:

  1. Fighting global warming (in many ways)
  2. Protecting biodiversity by encouraging the use of native plants and promoting awareness and control of invasive plants
  3. Nurturing stronger connections, in our youth, to nature and the outdoors
  4. Planting trees and promoting healthy, sustainable forests
  5. Conserving open space and fostering “smarter” land use decisions
We here at the Gardens are also passionate about these environmental themes, especially the use of native plants in backyard gardens. Through our efforts as a Partner, we hope to help further conservation in Pennsylvania. To learn more about how you can participate in iConservePA programs or to sign up for the SEEDS e-newsletter, please visit the iConservePA web site (or stop in to the Gardens for iConservePA brochures).

Summer 2008: Monarch Rearing and Tagging at Goodell Gardens

Though we did not find as many Monarch caterpillars as in 2007, this year we have reared about 26 caterpillars. Once again the popular hot spot for laying eggs was our small crop of Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) outside the Visitor's Center.

This year, as part of our Monarch Watch Waystation duties, we have also begun tagging our hatched butterflies before their long trip south. These tags provide valuable information to Monarch Watch about the life of the butterflies. If you find a butterfly (alive or dead) with a small, white circular tag, Monarch Watch asks that you contact them with the tag number (see their website for more info). We have also been using our caterpillars to educate visitors about the Monarch, its life cycle, and ways to provide much-needed habitats for these beautiful creatures.

Goodell Gardens is an official Monarch Watch Waystation.
